Virginia Reda is an artist with an unusual specialty: pet portraiture. Although she also paints traditional landscapes, the pet portraits of cats, birds, rabbits, dogs, and horses have become what you might call her pet project -- keeping her the busiest year-round. "I work from photographs the family has taken of their pet," said Reda.

"I like to have at least five photographs to work from.

Then the owner and I discuss the color of the pet's coat or other distinctive markings.

I keep the backgrounds plain unless the pet I'm painting is a working or hunting animal, in which case I'd include an outdoor scene."
