Q: How common is depression in older adults?
A: One out of every six seniors seen in a primary care doctor's office is affected by depression.
Seniors who have numerous medical problems are at least twice as likely to be depressed as compared to healthy seniors.
Q: How do I know if I or a loved one has clinical depression?
A: The signs and symptoms of depression are:
• feeling sad, anxious or irritable
• difficulty finishing tasks that you could previously manage
• difficulty concentrating or thinking
• feeling that life is not worthwhile or wishing you wouldn't wake up in the morning
• feeling useless or hopeless
• frequent crying
