Article: There's an art to building fishing rods

Neal Faulkner, who builds fishing rods in his New York home, says he sees the popularity of do-it-yourselfers growing.

Neil Faulkner used to watch his father assemble fishing rods using baby food jars and a dictionary. The old man would put thread in the jars and feed it through the big book of words toward the rod, winding it by hand around the guides until they were secure and in perfect position.

The dictionary was used to control the tension on the line.

For a more free-moving thread he might place it in the B's. For more tension on the line, he would stick it in the X's or Y's. The more pages that were on top of the thread, the greater the tension would be.
