NEW LENOX -- Lake Michigan water is only hours away.
Village officials will formally flip the switches at 4 p.m. Friday for the lake water to flow into the village water system, Mayor Mike Smith announced at a village board meeting Tuesday night.
The ceremonial turn-on will take place at the village's largest water-storage facility located off Joliet Highway, just south of Martino Junior High School.
Smith said residents may not get pure lake water for about a month, with some well water lingering in the system.
He added that customers may want to keep water softeners around for as much as six months.
The long-awaited switch from well to lake water won't mean a sudden jump in water rates.
