Article: Coal City parents try to help others in aftermath of daughter's death

Beth Ann Miller of Coal City had a bright future ahead of her. A sophomore at Eastern Illinois University, she was a health science major.

Her death on March 12, 1999, from bacterial meningitis brought those dreams to a tragic end.

As her parents, Judy and Rich Miller, later learned, there is a vaccine for this often fatal disease.

"As we were leaving the hospital after Beth's death, a doctor told us there has been a vaccine for bacterial meningitis for almost 30 years," Judy Miller said.

"If we had known about the vaccine, we would have made sure Beth Ann was inoculated."
