Dave Converse holds a hoop to Cassie Bradford during "flurry training" at Martial Arts America in Plainfield. The gym is run by Converse and wife Barb, who try to provide a family-friendly atmosphere.
You can hit "Lurch" as hard as you want, but when you're working with another person, you have to use control.
That's one of the first rules children learn at Martial Arts America, said David Converse, who owns and operates the martial arts school with his wife Barbara.
"Lurch" is the oversized stuffed practice dummy on which students, some as young as 4 years old, practice their skills.
He doesn't feel anything when he's hit or kicked, but the students sometimes do.
