Article: Terra cotta exterior approved by trustees for third library

The most modern of architectural designs using the most ancient of building materials has yet to stand the test of time in the Midwest. That has Naperville Library trustees a little wary of committing completely to the proposed terra cotta exterior that architects at Phillips Swager Associates chose for the city's third library.

Trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to use it, but said they also will consider metal paneling should costs be prohibitive when bids come in next year.

The terra cotta material, while new to the United States, is used in Europe and is expected to cost about $4 a square foot less than the alternative of metal panels.
