Article: Easy prey

I have this terrible feeling that the residents of Fremont School District 79 are being manipulated. Whenever the school board decides that it wants more money, it calls for a referendum that will tax the property owners for many years to come, if not forever.

"It's all for the kids!" they exclaim.

Crowded classrooms, not enough teachers, a scarcity of supplies, last year's computers are the hardships that will befall the children of the district, perhaps not now but certainly as the enrollment increases.

Too many pupils, not enough money, goes the School Board mantra.

There are several solutions, only one of which appeals to the board: Raise taxes $3, $4 or $500 a year for the home ...
