Local residents have little to fear this year after the recent discoveries of West Nile virus in 11 DuPage birds.
But next year the issue could be a major county concern.
Dennis Luehring, environmental health supervisor for the DuPage County Health Department, said the insect population has largely gone into hibernation before the impending cold weather arrives, limiting the threat of mosquitoes to humans.
However, the presence -- and growth -- of the West Nile virus indicates that when mosquitoes awaken next year officials may need to take drastic steps to prevent a serious health risk.
