Article: DNR report suggests Fox River smallmouth bass regulations may not be necessary

The author shows off one of the many 18-inch smallmouth bass he's caught and released in the Fox River since harvest regulations went into effect.

In April 1997, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) established a smallmouth bass harvest regulation study on the Fox River. The study includes a catch and release zone from South Elgin to North Aurora and a 14-inch minimum size limit in the area between the North Aurora and Montgomery Dams.

A "control" zone was also established where no special regulations were in effect.

Smallmouth bass were sampled by electrofishing at three stations within each of these zones once per year from 1997-2000.
