THE ASSOCIATED PRESS body: CHICAGO -- For years, Lake Michigan anglers had a well-kept secret: the booming population of smallmouth bass.
But now, the secret is out, and the bass are getting plenty of attention, both from fishermen and biologists.
When the legendary Bass Masters Classic is held in Chicago July 20-22, it will be the first time the championship tournament of 46 pros has come to such a northern -- or urban -- area.
Ironically, the invasive zebra mussels have contributed to the bass comeback.
The mussels clean the water with their indiscriminate filter feeding of organisms -- a practice perfectly suited to smallmouth, which feed by sight.
