Days Gone By / E.C. `Mike' Alft Just How Cold Was It? Winters in days gone by have often seemed to assume the status of legend in the memories of old timers, but existing records back them up.

George S. Adams remembered that during a cold spell in 1895 the entire southeast end of Elgin was without water for several days.

When the water mains had been laid a few years before, the original crown of Bartlett's Hill at National and Villa streets still remained.

Later the hill was graded down, and the mains, probably only four feet below the surface, froze up.

The minimum depth is five and one-half feet.

It was so cold in February 1899 that the Fox was almost a solid block of ice.
