Outdoors Catch smallmouths close to home now
The smallmouth bass is one of the most important freshwater gamefish found in North America.
It is widely acclaimed as the top trophy of the bass family.
Usually found in rocky locations in lakes and streams, smallmouth bass feed on minute crustaceans, insect larvae, crayfish and minnows.
Smallmouth bass abandon their winter dormancy and become active in April when water temperatures on area lakes and rivers climbs to 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Spawning usually takes place when water temperature reaches 60-70 degrees.
With increased regulation and a little good fortune, smallmouth bass prospects are on the rise in Illinois.
