The issue: Some have criticized the use of federal agents to take custody of Elian Gonzalez.
We say: Peaceful means of enforcing the law were being met with delay and defiance, forcing the federal government's hand.
The result was that the law was upheld, without bloodshed.
Obstinacy necessitated Elian's inevitable rescue
The rescue -- and that's what it was -- of young Elian Gonzalez was made inevitable not by any hastiness on the part of Attorney General Janet Reno's but by the intransigence of Lazaro Gonzalez, the boy's other Miami relatives and their supporters.
