Area legislators join in call for repeal of sales tax on gas [ ] Special session: Ryan, lawmakers to meet on tax cut zB1 By Michelle Krupa STAFF WRITER Across the Fox Valley and across party lines, state legislators strongly support temporary suspension or permanent repeal of the 5 percent sales tax on gasoline that goes to the state.

Lawmakers from Aurora to Elgin, from Plainfield to Coal City, agree that in the wake of soaring gas prices, the state's portion of the total 6.25 percent sales tax should be eliminated.

The tax break would reduce the price of gas 9 to 10 cents a gallon in the Chicago area and ease the burden on Illinois drivers who pay more than $2 a gallon.
