Savanna's record a mistake, weather service says THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Savanna's claim as the coldest spot ever in Illinois turned out to be brief.

The National Weather Service reported Wednesday that an employee mistakenly put out an unofficial reading from the northwest Illinois town.

That means the record low remains with Congerville, which hit 36 below zero Tuesday.

That day's reading of 37 below in Savanna was not turned in by an official weather observer using certified equipment, and was put on the weather service's information wire in error, said Bob Collins, a forecaster for the weather service.
