`City of New Orleans' has musical history The "City of New Orleans" is built of iron, but it's always had music in its soul.

Arlo Guthrie made the train famous when he sang the 1970s anthem by that name, a tune penned by folk singer Steve Goodman as he rode to New Orleans. The train had just begun the same run Monday night when it crashed and derailed outside Chicago.

When Goodman wrote his song, the Illinois Central Railroad ran the train, a fact noted in Goodman's lyrics.

"The majority of that song was written in 15 or 20 minutes, right on the train.

He did crossword puzzles like that," said Al Bunetta, manager for Goodman, who died in 1984.
