Supreme Court: Bad lawmaking means no life sentence for baby's killer zB1 By Christopher Wills THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD A poorly written law means a mother cannot be sentenced to life in prison for murdering her baby, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled Thursday.

Jessica Wooters was convicted in Marion County of murdering her 19-day-old son in 1996. State law at the time required a life sentence if the death penalty was not imposed.

But that 1995 law contained two subjects -- crime and mortgage foreclosures, the Supreme Court ruled.

The state constitution states legislation must be limited to a single subject.
