Their mission accomplished, state police leaving Cicero THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
CICERO -- State police who have patrolled this long-troubled Chicago suburb for more than seven months after wholesale police firings said Wednesday that they will leave on New Year's Eve.
The numerous dismissals this spring left the Cicero department severely under strength.
But the force is now just 16 officers short of its budgeted 123 slots.
"The Illinois State Police leaves Cicero with its mission accomplished," state police Acting Director Gene Marlin said as troopers got set to pull out of the community, known as a mob haven in the Al Capone era and for decades afterwards.
