Challengers in the upcoming Elgin City Council election sent a clear message to Mayor Kevin Kelly Thursday: Please, quit trying to help us knock off the incumbents.
Kelly, who is not a candidate in the Feb. 25 primary, has sent two mailings to residents criticizing incumbent candidates Robert Gilliam and John Walters.
The mayor would like to see Gilliam, Walters or incumbent Ed Schock defeated in the election to change the makeup of the council.
The attacks, however, may be backfiring as Gilliam and Walters say they've gained support since the pamphlets hit area mailboxes.
At a Thursday morning forum, the challenging candidates moved to distance themselves from the literature.
