Article: Oberweis patches rift with Catholic League

AURORA -- U.S. Senate candidate James Oberweis of Aurora has made up with the New York-based Catholic League after he apologized for "misinterpreted" remarks about the role his religion would play in his campaign. In explaining during interviews last week why he felt government should not be involved in moral issues such as abortion, he used Afghanistan's Taliban regime as an example of what can happen if a government imposes its religious beliefs on its people.

The statement drew an impassioned response from the Catholic League, which called the remarks "despicable" and demanded an apology.

Oberweis called Catholic League President William Donohue Tuesday to clear up the misunderstanding.
