Article: Life or death issue; Greyhound rescue organizations look to save racing dogs from premature deaths

Alma and Joe Nardi of Bolingbrook adopted their greyhounds Sinbad, left, and Scheherezade, from a rescue shelter when they lived in Michigan. Although the cruelty that racing greyhounds are subjected to is fairly well-known, the Nardis say there is still a need for the rescued dogs to be placed in homes.

It's obvious why Joseph and Alma Nardi lovingly call their dogs the "pretzel puppies." Sinbad, 6, and Scheherezade, 3, lie with their lanky bodies curled up on a couch and a large floor pillow while their owners entertain a guest.

The greyhounds twist up to about half their size and sleep as if sedated, unwillingly raising an ear or an eyelid if they hear their names or the magic words, ...
