Article: Tough opening days for Heidecke Lake

Heidecke Lake opened at 6 a.m. Monday. Several dozen boaters were in the waiting line. It was a beautiful, warm and sunny morning -- and, it was all downhill from there. Sleet, hail, snow and rain moved through the area by Monday afternoon, and Tuesday's horrifying electrical storms certainly wouldn't help the cooling lake to a good start for the season.

Still, that the cooling lakes opened at all was a surprise to many of us and is going to be a shot in the arm for area anglers. Powerton (near Peoria), Clinton, LaSalle, Braidwood and Heidecke combine to provide thousands of acres of first-rate fishing with free access close to home.
