Article: Denmark sues EU Commission over feta cheese ruling

COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Feta cheese made anywhere else than where it originated in ancient times just isn't feta cheese, Greece contends. So far, Greek feta defenders have the support of the European Union, which has given Greece exclusive rights to produce the native cheese. But Denmark this week sued the European Union's executive commission, calling the product a generic foodstuff, not a regional delicacy.

In October, the EU added feta to a list of hundreds of gourmet products given "designation of origin" protection. That means they can only be produced in a given area, using traditional methods.
