Article: The death penalty crusader goes to death row

MOVIE REVIEWS Capital punishment has provided the background for quite a range of movies -- from '50s melodrama ("I Want to Live") to straight-out anti-capital-punishment passion ("Dead Man Walking") to science fiction ("The Green Mile"). Now comes a frustrating mix of the sublime and the aggravating called "The Life of David Gale."

Sublime because it mixes the usual expert, tension-building direction of Alan Parker ("Evita," "Mississippi Burning") with some fine acting by Kevin Spacey, Kate Winslet and Laura Linney, plus a suspenseful, turn-the-page mystery drama. And sublime because it offers convincing arguments -- more intellectual than emotional -- against killing people for revenge.
