Article: Art therapy helps migraine sufferers

CHICAGO -- When Marion Pruitt feels a migraine headache begin, the 60-year-old grandmother from Camas, Wash., doesn't retreat to a darkened bedroom as so many of the 28 million Americans who suffer from migraines do. Instead, Pruitt turns her attention to canvas, more specifically to paint through her pain, often putting her headaches at bay and not letting the pain interfere with her life. Afflicted with migraines for 44 years, Pruitt's headaches often last two or three days.

To assist migraine sufferers and artists like Pruitt, the National Headache Foundation sponsored the Fourth Migraine Masterpieces National Art Contest and Exhibition to raise awareness about this disease. More than ...
