Article: Diabetes facts and figures [] Approximately 17 million people in the United States, or 6.2 percent of the population, have diabetes. Of those, about a third are unaware they have the disease. [] Approximately 7.8 million, or 8.3 percent of all men over the age of 20 in the U.S., have diabetes. [] About 9.1 million, or 8.9 percent of all women over the age of 20 in the U.S., have diabetes. [] Nearly 7 million people, or 20.1 percent of the U.S. population age 65 and older, have diabetes. [] Approximately 2.8 million, or 13 percent of all African Americans, have diabetes. [] About 2 million, or 10.2 percent of all Latino Americans, have diabetes. [] Almost 105,000 Native Americans and Alaska Natives, or 15.1 percent of those receiving care from the Indian Health services, have the disease. [] The most life-threatening consequences of diabetes are heart disease and stroke, which strike diabetics twice more than they do people who do not have the disease.
