Article: 2004 a busy year for history buffs in St. Louis area St. Louis is celebrating three of its most important anniversaries in 2004: the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804 that opened the American West, the 100th anniversary of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and the 100th anniversary of America's first Olympic games. The 1904 World's Fair, formally called the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, was held in St. Louis' Forest Park to celebrate the centennial of President Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France and the exploration of the territory by Lewis and Clark. The event, famous for being the last of the great world's fairs, introduced ice cream cones and iced tea to the world and popularized Ragtime music, hot dogs, hamburgers and set trends and fashions for years afterward. The first Olympic Games to be held in the United States were staged at Washington University's Francis Field in conjunction with the fair.
