I wonder whatever happened to John L. Bell. He was a real hero who knew exactly what to do while others just stood there. Although I knew the details of the event that he was involved in, I didn't know about his role until a reader mailed me a copy of a June 17, 1927 Spectator newspaper. And there was Bell's picture. He was the hero who saved the sheriff's life that day.

The date was June 13, 1927. It was a Monday in downtown Joliet at the county jail. Four desperate killers condemned to hang on a gallows already constructed made a daring escape attempt.
