It took nine years to make Gary's only animal shelter acceptable for animals and humans again. But now the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana is in peril again.

"We have a lovely shelter," said Betty Clayton, the Humane Society's executive director. "Everyone who's been here says what a nice facility it is."

But since it reopened last fall, the shelter's income has been only a fraction of its costs.
