Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, the nickel-a-gallon gasoline tax will be reinstated after being suspended on July 1 by Gov. Frank O'Bannon. O'Bannon suspended the tax because he said crude oil shortages and high prices at the pump put Indiana at an economic disadvantage.

Republican Larry Borst of Greenwood, chairman of the state Senate Finance Committee, accused O'Bannon of using the issue to boost his chances for re-election.
