Boats being abandoned at marinas along Lake Michigan aren't exactly leaving harbormasters high and dry, but proposed legislation could change that.
The Lake Michigan Marina Development Commission on Dec. 20 will consider a proposal to give harbormasters the authority to dispose or sell the abandoned boats to recoup the cost of storing the vessels.
It now can cost harbormasters more than the boats are worth to store them, as current Indiana law now requires.
"The (abandoned) boats have limited value, a few hundred dollars at best," said Scott Westphal, the harbormaster at Michigan City, where six boats have been stuck in storage ...
