Article: U.S. finds 1.7 percent of coeds raped in '96-97

The Justice Department estimated Friday that 1.7 percent of U.S. college women were raped during the 1996-97 school year and another 1.1 percent were victims of attempted rape. The report also estimated that 13 percent of college women had been stalked at school that year -- a much higher figure than an earlier private study had found among women of all ages.

The federally funded researchers, who used a broader definition of stalking, concluded that women face a higher risk of stalking on campuses because they have close contact with a wide variety of men there.
