Q. Are pine nuts really nuts?
A. Sure they are.
Just because they don't show up in your favorite can of mixed nuts doesn't mean they're not just as nutty as an almond or cashew.
Nuts are dry seeds or fruits with an internal, edible kernel surrounded by a hard shell or rind. Pine nuts fit the bill exactly.
Depending on the type of tree, pine nuts can be slender and pellet-shaped or more triangular. They're creamy-colored and about half-inch to an inch long. The pinyon variety is said to have a slightly sweeter flavor than pignolia, but flavor differences between various types of pine nuts are subtle.
