Trauma to the teeth and gums is the most common type of injury when there is a blow to the mouth and face during participation in sports.
These injuries can be drastically reduced by wearing a custom-fit mouth guard. In football, where mouth guards are mandatory, the percentage of injuries to the teeth and oral cavity is low. In other sports, where a mouth guard is not worn, the percentage of injuries is much, much higher.
There are two types of mouth guards: custom-fit and stock.
