The material for this week's column comes courtesy of an inquisitive middle school administrator who questions the wisdom of adding resistance training to her walking routine to help her lose weight.
Q: My walking program enabled me to lose weight during my first few months of exercise, but now I've reached a plateau. A personal trainer at the fitness center where I work out suggested I do resistance training to expedite weight loss. I don't understand how adding muscle will help me lose fat. I thought walking would be the best way to do that. Please explain.
A: More than aerobic exercise is needed.
