The death of Lingua Franca, the magazine about intellectual and literary life in the academy, was not only sad news for the magazine's followers and admirers, it was a shock.
The "apparent demise," noted the New York Times when it broke the story on Oct. 18, "elicited exclamations of dismay in the world of letters." There'd been no indication the magazine was in trouble.
Quite the opposite -- just four years ago, founder Jeffrey Kittay had spun off a new magazine, University Business. Last year, the company reportedly spent more than $1 million to purchase the popular Web site Arts & Letters Daily. Covering Lingua Franca's 10th ...
