The death of Lingua Franca, the magazine about intellectual and literary life in the academy, was not only sad news for the magazine's followers and admirers, it was a shock. The "apparent demise," noted the New York Times when it broke the story on Oct. 18, "elicited exclamations of dismay in the world of letters." There'd been no indication the magazine was in trouble.
