It was not a big deal back then, 80 years ago, but Judith Kaplan's bat mitzvah had long-lasting and far-reaching effects. Kaplan was the first girl in America to have a bat mitzvah ceremony. A Jewish girl becomes a bat mitzvah when she turns 121/2 and bat mitzvah ceremonies are now common in the United States. To mark that low-key but important event, Temple Israel held a service to commemorate it.
