Derek Goins thought he was done with this kind of stuff. As a junior pitcher at Lake Central in 1999, Goins spent most of the season on the shelf with a bum elbow.

Doctors never were sure what the problem was, a stretched tendon perhaps. But he avoided surgery.

The following year, his senior season, Goins wasn't 100 percent healthy until the end of the campaign, but it was just in time to lead the Indians to the state finals.
