Article: Derailment sidetracks South Shore riders

A derailment on another railroad threw the South Shore Line's afternoon commute into chaos Thursday. A Metra electric train ran off its tracks in downtown Chicago on Thursday morning, knocking out the railroad's power north of 11th Street in Chicago.

The South Shore uses Metra tracks in Chicago.

Because of the outage, most South Shore cars were stranded in the Loop after dropping off the morning's commuters.

To bring about 5,000 commuters home to Northwest Indiana, the South Shore had only 17 railroad cars south of the derailment site, spokesman John Parsons said.
