A man convicted of killing a Gary cop will not have his sentencing trial in Lake County as his attorneys requested. An Allen County judge ruled Monday on the request by defendant Zolo Agona Azania in the 22-year-old capital case.

Azania, formerly known as Rufus Averhart, was sentenced to death in 1982 and in 1996 by Allen County juries. However, both death sentences were overturned by higher courts. A glitch in Allen County's computer system resulted in blacks being excluded from the jury that decided his sentences.
