BATAVIA -- Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is an early contender for the next big thing in physics: a 20-mile particle speedway where matter and anti-matter would collide and, scientists hope, reveal secrets of the universe. The Linear Collider is an international project that would cost $4 billion to $10 billion. If approved, construction near the lab would begin between 2007 and 2010 and take about six years.
