Article: Candidate to be `voice for health care'

Joyce Washington says there is a need in the U.S. Senate for a person dedicated to the health care issue. As a health care professional for the last 25 years, Washington said, she is qualified to be that person. "This is the No. 1 domestic policy issue," she said during a recent interview. "I'll bring that hands-on experience to the issue." Washington's career began as a young emergency room nurse in Georgia. She also served at a military hospital in the United States during the Vietnam War.

After obtaining a master's degree, she oversaw 20 long-term care facilities in the Midwest. She was CEO of two Chicago hospitals before creating the consulting business she currently operates.
