Article: Not simply rubbish; Household hazardous waste needs to be handled carefully

That weed killer and fertilizer you were thinking about throwing out now that the growing season is over can cause significant damage to the environment if it's not disposed of properly.

While the chemicals themselves are fine to put on the lawn, if they are thrown away with the regular garbage they can cause a break in the landfill liner and eventually contaminate ground water.

The same goes for a laundry list of household hazardous waste material.
