Article: Saltzman indicted for murder; Appellate court orders new trial for the stepson of former Will County treasurer

JOLIET -- An appellate court this week ordered a new trial for the man convicted of attempted murder in connection with the beating of former Will County Treasurer Jack Weber. But within a day of the appellate court ruling, the Will County state's attorney's office convinced a grand jury to hand down a three-count murder indictment alleging 23-year-old Brent Saltzman caused Weber's death, which occurred nearly two years after the brutal beating.

Saltzman is Weber's stepson. The defendant is accused of attacking Weber during a dispute at the treasurer's Shorewood home on Oct. 8, 2000. Weber suffered serious head injuries in the attack and died last September at age 65.
