Article: Brush with history; Public art teachwa residenta about nature of their communities

A mural depicting local history is on display at the Gaylord Building in Lockport, was part of a Friends of Community Public Art exhibit.

Kathleen Farrell has always been familiar with the type of salary an artist takes home. But knowing that it's often not much didn't stop the Joliet sculptor, painter and muralist from pursuing the arts as a career. Farrell and friend Kathleen Scarboro started Friends of Community Public Arts for just that reason -- to help provide work for area artists. The organization, which creates art to be displayed in public places, employs both the founders and about 15 more artists full time.

"I had to develop something that didn't exist," Farrell said.
