Article: Seniors become tutors under D73 program

For at least the next three years, East Prairie School pupils and senior citizens are going to get to know each other quite well.

And their new acquaintance could help boost pupil reading scores in the district, too.

A $30,000 grant awarded to District 73 last month will be used to fund a new program to bring senior citizens into East Prairie classrooms. Under the three-year program, seniors will volunteer their time to teach pupils better reading comprehension.

Like many school districts in the area, District 73 has witnessed a decline in pupil reading scores in recent years.
