"Life is what happens when we make other plans," Velma Lowe said of the path which took her from grade-school teacher to her recent promotion to Mount Prospect Village Clerk.

"My plan was to teach and be home when my kids got home from school," she said.

"Things have changed so much since I was teaching in Lebanon, Tenn., my home town," she said. "I noticed the last couple of years my daughter was in after-school day care, when I picked her up at 5:30 or 5:45 p.m., it was not unusual to see the teacher still there.
