Article: Army will study Lake Michigan

The U.S. Army's environmental team at Fort Sheridan has announced it will conduct an assessment along Lake Michigan for possible residual effects from artillery shells.

The fort's environmental manager, Colleen Reilly, said representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the fort's environmental team will jointly collect and study new water and sediment samples from the lake.

Shells were fired during a period beginning in the 1930s and ending in the 1950s as part of training conducted at the fort.
