Deerfield's American Legion post is looking for a few good men. A few good Merchant Marine men.

Deerfield Post No. 738 plans to add the Merchant Marine seal to the five other armed service seals - Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard - that adorn its five-year-old memorial in Jewett Park.

The dedication will take place during Memorial Day services this May. And Legion members would like to honor some Merchant Marine veterans at the unveiling.

The trouble, until recently, was they didn't know any.

A recently deceased Deerfield resident, James Doherty Jr., was the only local veteran who post members knew served in the Merchant Marine.
